The Lower School Curriculum (1st and 2nd Years - School Years 7 and 8)
Structure
Lower School Houses
All pupils are allocated to one of the four Lower School day houses (Dolman, Hutton, Gruggen, Wilberforce).
The housemaster or housemistress is the teacher primarily involved in the academic and pastoral progress of each member of his/her house.
Boarders entering the Lower School will join either Dolman House (boys) or Orchard House (girls).
Teaching Groups
The 1st Year
Teaching in English and mathematics is in ability-based sets. For other subjects teaching is in mixed-ability forms.
The 2nd Year
Teaching in English, French, mathematics and science is in ability-based sets. For other subjects teaching is in mixed-ability forms.
Placement and Mobility
Initial placement into sets or bands is based on
entrance examination results and on the school
report. Any subsequent changes are based on internal examination results and on
general progress. Parents are
contacted prior to proposed changes.
Class size is usually not more than 20.
Curriculum
46 periods per week.
