Boarding at Pocklington & Lyndhurst Schools

We welcome boarders from the UK and abroad from the age of 8. Boarders are an important part of our school community and we were delighted when our boarding was last inspected by OFSTED in June 2010 to find that our boarders had told the school inspectors how well they are looked after here. The full report can be read by clicking here: Boarding Inspection Report

Why board?

Reasons for boarding are as diverse as our students and their families but in general boarding can provide: continuity of education for families where parents' employment involves long hours, or requires regular travel or even a period of living abroad. It can allow time to pursue academic study or enthusiasms that students or their parents might otherwise struggle to fit into demanding daily routines. Boarding can help young people to develop self confidence and responsibility for themselves and others, it often forges life-long friendships: sharing life and study with contemporaries from other cultures can promote understanding of multicultural issues - an increasingly important skill in this globalised world.

Our 'home from home' houses

We aim to provide our boarders with a 'home from home' environment. Our youngest boarders are accommodated in spacious bedrooms with no more than 2 - 4 beds and in the sixth form many boarders will have their own room or share with a friend. All our houses have common rooms and kitchens for the preparation of snacks in addition to the main meals provided in our central dining hall. Visits are allowed in the communal areas of houses making it easy for boarders to keep in touch with friends and siblings from other houses.

Most of our boarders are full boarders and stay at school seven days a week. Full boarders enjoy their own separate programme of weekend and after school activities which is not available to day pupils.
