Accommodation

Fenwick-Smith House was opened in Summer 2007, providing high-quality, spacious accommodation for senior boys. There is a mix of single, double and 3-bed rooms, all with en-suite facilities. Each boy has his own area within the bedroom with study facilities as well as bedroom furniture. Upper Sixth Formers usually have their own single study bedrooms. All rooms have ICT network points from which pupils can access their personal files on the school intranet and gain filtered access to the internet.

School and Academic Work

The staff aim to run a house with a warm friendly atmosphere, in which people show respect and consideration for one another; their charges reflect this, enjoying a good mix of work and play. Prep (homework) time runs from 6.45-8 p.m. and then 8.15-9 p.m. for year 11 upwards. Boys are expected to study quietly in their rooms; duty staff and prefects are on hand to ensure that a positive working environment is maintained. Sixth formers are expected to be responsible enough to organise their own work at other times as well, e.g. in private study lessons. The school library is staffed until 8pm, so boarders may choose to do their first prep session there. The housemaster keeps a close eye on daily academic work and progress which is regularly discussed with individual pupils.

The school’s Art, Design and ICT Departments are staffed and open to boarders after school and boys who study these subjects for GCSE and A level have an opportunity to get on with their coursework. Boarders can also access the Music Department after school in order to practise instruments or study for exam coursework.

All Fenwick-Smith House boys also belong to a day house at school and have a form tutor who is responsible for their daytime tutorial sessions in school.

Relaxation

The house is equipped with superb study, ICT, music and games facilities. The common rooms have comfortable sofas, Sky TV and kitchen facilities for the preparation of snacks. There is also a snooker room and table tennis facilities.

Activities are available during the week including football (indoor and outdoor), touch rugby, cricket, badminton, table tennis, swimming and trampolining, as well as the varied extra-curricular programme of the main school.

Football is a regular event after prep in the evenings for many boys, others make use of the school’s music facilities or participate in regular weekly swimming sessions. Free time might also be spent playing or competing at pool, surfing the web, (filtered of course), or chilling out with friends.

Weekends are a heady mix of organised activity and active rest. A trip is organised each Sunday for which boys can sign up: this may be a more adventurous activities such as paintballing, go-karting, skiing, theme parks or possibly something more chilled such as a coach trip to the cinema complex in York or even shopping.
