Pocklington School - Drama
Pocklington School provides many opportunities
for pupils to get involved in the performing arts, on-stage and behind
the scenes. Annually we stage the following:
A House drama competition organised and directed by the students themselves and performed over two nights in October
A Senior School play - usually a classic play given a modern twist; sometimes a musical. It is a large cast event which works to the highest standards possible. recent shows have included... Gogol's The Government Inspector, Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night's Dream, the York Mystery Plays. The 2009 production was Brecht's Threepenny Opera moved to the 1984 miners' strike.
A Middle School play for 3rd and 4th year students. Recent productions have been The Importance of Being Earnest and Northanger Abbey.
A Lower School Play for members of the 1st and 2nd year. This is always very popular and also plays to local schools or residential homes for the elderly.
In addition to these there are performances outside of the school; for example, the 6th form will be performing at Pocklington Arts Centre in May; there will be a staging of extracts from the original York Pageant for York Civic Society, performed at the Merchant Adventurers' Hall in York in September 2009 to celebrate the pageant's 100th anniversary. In 2010 the school has been invited to take on the closing play of the York Mystery Cycle in the streets of York as part of the Guilds' International Mystery Play festival.
We also run a Lower School drama club; there are opportunities for juggling, puppetry and playwriting and we pride ourselves on promoting technical theatre. courses on lighting can be taken through the school and there are opportunities for all types of technical support work around school events.
The department has qualified drama specialists and a full time, professionally trained theatre technician as well as its own wardrobe construction facilities run by an excellent Wardrobe Manager and a trained and skilled Front of House team. Co-curricular opportunities abound!
