Pocklington School - Music

Music at Pocklington is thriving both as a subject area and as a co-curricular activity.

Our aim is to raise the best musicians to a very high level of skill while encouraging every pupil in the School in a good level of enjoyable musical activity. Pupils choose to get involved because it’s a dynamic department covering a diverse variety of music – from the discipline and austerity of the Music Society, to the sheer exuberance of House Music, there’s something here for all musical tastes.

Music plays an extremely important part in the life of the school. Almost half of the pupils receive individual tuition and some 13 groups rehearse weekly.

These are catholic in their appeal, ranging from a Brass Ensemble and the school orchestra, to the Rock Band and Swing Band. Two choirs provide structured singing for pupils of all ages. Joint productions across the Music, Drama and English departments have resulted in some outstanding musicals being staged in the Tom Stoppard Theatre. Recently performances of Bugsy, My Fair Lady and The Threepenny Opera have played to packed houses.

The quality of the School’s music is recognised within the local community and we are regularly approached to perform at events across the region. Recent events have included singing at York Minster in the celebration service for our most famous OP, William Wilberforce, and at a Burnby Hall, Pocklington; as well as the Swing Band performing to raise money for churches in the villages of Warter and Thornton.

Pocklington’s music also travels widely though biennial Swing Band tours and CDs.
