Pocklington School - Pocklington Award
Based on the York Award at
York University, the Pocklington Award is a certificate presented to
students who have fully committed themselves to the extra-curricular
life of Pocklington School, through involvement in activities such as
sport, drama, music and CCF. It is designed to ensure that
students leave Pocklington equipped with the skills to make an impact in
higher education or any working environment.
Pupils in the Lower School work
towards the Bronze Award.
They are required to participate in sporting activities, the
creative arts, and try a range of other lunchtime activities. Staff award points
to recognise their involvement throughout their time in the Lower School and
ultimately those successful pupils gain the Bronze Award.
Pupils in the Middle School work
towards the Silver Award.
They are required to represent the school or their House in
events such as CCF competitions, sports matches, concerts or drama productions,
as well as being involved in regular extra-curricular activities. Staff
award points to recognise their involvement throughout their time in the Middle
School and those successful pupils will gain the Silver Award.
Pupils in the Sixth Form work
towards the Gold Award.
They are required to be involved in extra-curricular activities
within the context of a normal school day; to be involved in evening activities
such as lecture programmes or school arranged societies, as well as taking
responsibility for an activity – giving of their experience and expertise to the
school and the wider community. House Music and House Drama are already models
of good practice, where Sixth Form pupils take responsibility in leading younger
pupils towards a common goal. Many new opportunities have been created,
including reading with Lyndhurst pupils during free periods or at lunchtimes;
coaches/assistants for junior sports’ teams; lunchtime activity assistants,
helping staff with current activities.
Universities of today are looking for more than examination results to differentiate between pupils. The Pocklington Award provides students with evidence that they have developed the skills which many universities and employers look for during the selection process.
We are very excited by the opportunity this Award creates to acknowledge the huge involvement of many of our pupils, as well as providing an incentive for others to become more involved in the extra-curricular programme.
