Welcome to Boarding

A home from home

At Pocklington we are justifiably proud of the friendly and supportive atmosphere in our boarding community.  We are also proud of the quality of our boarding houses, which provide some of the best boarding accommodation in the UK.  Pupils have access to excellent facilities for study and relaxation, in a home from home atmosphere.

Our four boarding houses are located on, or adjacent to, our beautiful school campus, and the school itself is an integral part of the Yorkshire market town of Pocklington.  The historic city of York is a short journey away and there is easy access from the school to several international airports.

Girls are housed in either Orchard or Faircote House, and boys in Dolman or Fenwick-Smith House.  Each house is managed by a resident House parent and their team of caring, well qualified, and professional staff.  This House team focuses on the personal wellbeing of the individuals in their care, as well as assessing them in their academic study.

House parents provide the link between home and school, helping you to maintain a close relationship with your child.  Three school nurses (who work in our onsite medical centre) and two locally based school doctors look after the health of our community.

Boarding families are encouraged to visit and to maintain contact with their children, and parents are required to appoint a UK guardian for one-to-one contact and extra pupil support when parents cannot be present.

Boarding houses are equipped with telephones, internet and Skype facilities to ensure easy communications with home and we are happy to help boarders with transport arrangements for exeat weekends and holidays.

Our boarding provision is designed to be as flexible as possible, best to suit the needs of the individual pupil and their family.  Pupils can board either on a full-time or weekly basis, or just for one or two nights during the week.  We also offer occasional overnight boarding and extended day facilities for when the need arises.   More information is available by clinking on the 'Boarding Options' link.

Boarding life offers pupils routine, structure, academic support and less time in a daily commute.  Boarders also get the opportunity to make the very best of the co-curricular programme at Pocklington, with activities on offer each evening and a full programme of activities and trips available on weekends.

Boarding gives pupils an environment in which they can develop their independence, and helps them to develop long standing friendships with pupils of all ages from different backgrounds and cultures.  They become well integrated in the full life of the school community.

Our boarding houses allow pupils to thrive emotionally, socially and academically.  Pupils are given the opportunity to develop leadership, teamwork and tolerance.  We expect our boarders to  leave Pocklington as confident and responsible young adults.

If you think your family would benefit from boarding at Pocklington School, come and talk to us about the possibilities

Better still come for a taster night in one of our houses!
