Open Mornings

We like to meet our prospective pupils consequently we try to make it as easy as possible for you to visit the school as often as you need to. Prospective parents and their children and other relatives including grandparents are very welcome to visit the school. Visits can be arranged at any time including during the school holidays, however we recommend visiting on a normal school day during the term if possible to enable you to meet the staff and pupils.

A typical visit will include a meeting at the beginning and end of the visit with the Headmaster, a tour of the school conducted by a student (including a tour of a boarding house and a meeting with a housemaster or housemistress) and possibly lunch (depending on timings) with a member of staff. Tours can be tailored to meet individual interests and requirements and meetings with specific members of staff can be booked in advance. So if you have particular requirements please ask at the time of booking.

We also run a series of Open Mornings throughout the year. Details of these are posted in a separate section of the website accessible from the home page and included in the Current Information for Applicants Booklet.

Registration

Please note, the submission of the registration form together with the appropriate registration fee do not guarantee the offer of a place or commit a family to accepting the offer of a place.

Registration simply signals to the schools admissions office that you wish to proceed with arrangements for entry, including the entrance examination, and guarantees that you will automatically be contacted at the appropriate time with details of the entrance examinations and other entry arrangements, and other information about the school that may be of interest, including Open Mornings and Events.

Offers of Places

Offers of places are generally made as soon as the entrance examination results are known. Offers are normally time sensitive and should be accepted by the deadline in the offer letter. On acceptance of an offer parents must complete and return the parent/school agreement a copy of which will be sent to you.

Entry Requirements

Offers of places at Pocklington School are subject to vacancy and to a satisfactory entry examination result and school report from the applicant’s current school. An interview may also be held. Late applicants (i.e. pupils applying for entry in September 2012 after the entrance examinations have been held) should contact the Admissions Secretary for guidance as to availability of places and for special arrangements to sit the entrance examination.

Entry at 11+

There is only one entrance examination at 11+ in which scholarships are awarded to the best performing pupils.

The 11+ entrance examination for September 2012 is on Saturday 21 January 2012.

Entry at 13+

Applicants joining from preparatory schools at 13+ can either sit Common Entrance (June 2012) or Pocklington School’s 13+ entrance examination.

The 13+ entrance examination for September 2012 will be held on Saturday 11 February 2012. The most successful candidates in this exam are invited to sit the 13+ scholarship examination which will be held on Saturday 3 March 2012.

Sixth Form Entry

There is no entrance examination for the sixth form. All students internal and external must achieve a minimum of 4B and 2C grades to progress to the sixth form. The sixth form prospectus and admissions documents can be downloaded here.

Terms applying to payment of fees are given in the parent/school agreement. The following should however be noted: All fees are charged termly in advance and accounts are payable on or before the first day of term. Optional extras are charged to the account for the term following that in which the charges are incurred.

Parents can elect to pay by direct debit at the beginning of the academic year. The fees for the year including optional extras can be paid in 10 monthly instalments. Payments begin in the July before the start of the Academic Year in question and those wishing to use this service should contact the Bursar before that date.

Fees can be paid monthly by direct debit through a scheme administered by Holmwoods Term-time collections. A service charge is made by the Company and there is no long term commitment to the scheme. It may be possible to arrange for lump sum payments to meet fees over periods in excess of 6 terms.

Further details of any of these methods of payment are available from the Bursar or the School Accountant.

Sibling Discounts

Arrangements for sibling discounts are as follows:

Three children: £1,250 reduction for the third child
Four children: £1,750 reduction for the fourth child
Five children: £2,500 reduction for the fifth child

Sibling discounts apply to pupils at Lyndhurst and Pocklington Schools provided the pupils are at the schools at the same time. The discounts are only applicable to children who are under the full financial responsibility of the parent or parents. The discounts cannot be combined with other forms of discount except in cases where music/academic awards and grants from charitable trusts have been made.

Forces Discount

A discount is offered to boarding pupils whose parents are members of the Armed Forces. Pocklington is a senior school from age 11 for the purposes of the Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA) which means that the discounted fee is approximately equivalent to the CEA for a senior boarder plus the 10% that service parents have to pay from their own resources as part of the MOD’s conditions for receiving the allowance. Further details are available from the Bursar and from unit administrative offices.
