“Sport plays a formative role in individual personal development. All our students are encouraged to participate in sport whatever their aptitude and ability and gain the personal benefits necessary for success not just in sport but in other fields: improved physical fitness, self-respect and confidence, team awareness and leadership, determination and commitment.
We have excellent facilities and an enthusiastic and passionate coaching team who aim to ensure that each individual enjoys their chosen sport and plays it to their full potential. The school also has active links with many local clubs, county organisations, local universities and national bodies. Regular programmes with external professional coaches provide specialist support to our staff and ensure that we adopt the most effective new ideas to improve our students’ training”.
David Byas
Director of Sport

Pupils are taught to play the traditional sports – rugby, hockey and cricket for boys and hockey, netball and rounders for girls. They are also encouraged to try a wide range of other sports including athletics, tennis, squash, cross country, swimming and trampolining.

Professional coaches are an integral part of the team at Pocklington School. They complement our staff by providing them with specialist support in the delivery of games and keep us up to speed with the latest methods and practices being used in professional arenas.
The sports team at Pocklington School is ably led by David Byas ex Yorkshire County Cricket Captain. Rugby coach Richard ‘Biff’ Wareham is currently also head coach of the England U16 squad while Tim Shelley, Hockey Coach, has international experience at junior level.
