Pocklington School and Pocklington Prep School welcome pupils from around the world.
Overseas applicants go through the same assessment process as candidates in the UK but all applicants whose first language is not English will be tested for their English skills. This is because we are an English school, where English is used for teaching and all aspects of communication. Overseas applicants must have a good standard of English to benefit from what the school has to offer. We want you to get the most out of your time here and to be in a position to fully participate in a truly British education. All overseas boarders share boarding houses with UK boarders on our campus.

A guide for International Families is an information booklet about Pocklington School, written specifically for international families. Pocklington is not an international school - our curriculum is quintessentially 'British' - but our perspective is global. Overseas students are welcomed as an integral and much valued part of a school which delivers a world-class educational experience in the heart of East Yorkshire. It is a condition of acceptance in both Foundation Schools that all overseas pupils have an English speaking guardian who is a resident of the UK. Guardians are responsible for supporting pupils when their parents are not available and will be expected to look after students unable to return home during the holidays and on those weekends when the school is closed.

It is her job to
- Answer all your questions and provide you with all the information you need to apply.
- Arrange for any tests including English language tests. Tests can often be taken in your home country.
- Interview you. This is often done via Skype if you cannot visit us.
- Communicate any decisions about your application to you as soon as possible.
- When an offer is made, to ensure that you receive joining information and support you with any necessary travel arrangements, Tier 4 and visa arrangements.
- Help you organise any on-going support you need to improve your English skills.
Learning support for English as an additional language
Lessons in English as an Additional Language (EAL) are available in school for all overseas entrants whose first language is not English. The number of lessons required per week will vary depending on each student’s ability which will be assessed on arrival at school. This is taught by Mrs Chenery and her team of specialists. Lessons are charged as extras on the end of term bill.
The EAL specialist teachers also provide preparatory support for IELTS examinations for our sixth form students.
For those who would like some pre-sessional language training, Pocklington School has a partnership with Etherton Education – an accredited language tuition provider which can provide any level of preparatory English support that might be needed by incoming overseas students prior to joining the school.
Integration of overseas boarders
All our boarders live in one of four boarding houses on our rural campus: Dolman House (boys aged 8 – 15), Orchard (girls aged 8 – 14), Fenwick-Smith (boys aged 16 – 18) and Faircote (girls aged 15-18). A wide range of meals which include curries, vegetarian, and other international dishes, are served in a central dining hall on the school campus which is shared by all day and boarding pupils and all staff.
The schools also operate a large number of clubs and societies including a specialist after school programme for boarders so there are plenty of opportunities to join in and make friends not only in your boarding house but with day students who live in the local community.
