The sports department at Pocklington School is ably led by David Byas ex Yorkshire County Cricket Captain.
Pupils are taught to play the traditional sports – rugby, hockey, cricket, athletics and tennis for boys and hockey, netball, tennis, athletics and rounders for girls. There is also a wide range of other sports including archery, lacrosse, squash, table-tennis, judo and swimming available through the week.
The school provides a comprehensive fixtures list across all the major sports through all three terms and for all year groups. In addition, we support our pupils in competitions in other sports such as clay pigeon shooting, equestrian, ski-ing and trampolining. The school equestrian team competes regularly in NSEA competitions and we compete in the Kingston League and National Schools competitions in trampolining.
“Sport plays a formative role in individual personal development. All our students are encouraged to participate in sport whatever their aptitude and ability and gain the personal benefits necessary for success not just in sport but in other fields: improved physical fitness, self-respect and confidence, team awareness and leadership, determination and commitment. Our Inter-House competitions ensure that everyone can get involved, try something new and enjoy a variety of activities. We have excellent facilities and an enthusiastic and passionate coaching team who aim to ensure that each individual enjoys their chosen sport and plays it to their full potential. The school also has active links with many local clubs, county organisations, local universities and national bodies. Regular programmes with external professional coaches provide specialist support to our staff and ensure that we adopt the most effective new ideas to improve our students’ training”.

Through my time at Pocklington I thoroughly enjoyed my sport as a whole, whether that be rugby, tennis, squash or cricket. It was made easy to fit in to school teams, with a good social side as well as having lots of support from staff. There was always help available, whether that be on a technical issue in cricket, a review of a tight game against a good team, or simply a chat on balancing sport and study. The knowledge of staff who played high-level sport themselves helped me to improve my main sport, cricket, in particular and in general it was a pleasure to take part in sport for the school.
Sport has played a massive role in my time at Pock, taking part in a wide range of activities from swimming to shooting, but my favorite being hockey. School is where my passion for hockey started and the staff have provided endless support to develop my game in school hockey, club or the single system. Pock offers a massive array of sports with some fantastic facilities. Pupils are always encouraged to participate and maximise their potential in whatever sport they choose.
