Year 4 shares the joy of story-telling with parents

The amazing imaginations and creativity of our Prep School children powered a Story Spectacular hosted by Year 4 for their parents and grandparents.

Pupils at Pocklington Prep School story Spectacular The amazing imaginations and creativity of our Prep School children powered a Story Spectacular hosted by Year 4 for their parents and grandparents.

Children invited their grown-ups into the school hall to join story-based activities, view the impressive fables and poetry they have been writing in class, and see how our emphasis on creativity, collaboration, enquiry and reflection inspires great results.

Many pupils dressed up to help bring their characters to life, and also brought in story-based cakes and buns from home, with themes such as a Willie Wonka, the Tortoise and the Hare, and Harry Potter.

The busy and inspirational event kick-started National Story Telling Week from February 1st, staged to promote the magic of stories and help youngsters develop their story-telling skills, both orally and as a written form.

The Year 4s led the way as their invited adults joined them in using our award-winning Chatta app to create and narrate stories, as well as the ChatterPix app to give voices to characters. They also took part in bookmark-making workshops and enjoyed story-writing games.

Year 4 teacher Lizzie Kennedy said: “This was a great opportunity to show parents and grandparents the fantastic work our Year 4s have been doing in class. The children had written their work with the clear purpose of sharing it, which added an extra dimension.

“They led the adults in different activities and taught them the skills that they’ve developed. Talking about their learning boosted their confidence and brilliantly showcased their creativity and commitment to producing work of a high standard.”

Mrs Kennedy added: “The children were so excited to be able to spend time with their parents and show them all that they have been working on. It was great to see everyone working together on all the different activities. There was a lovely atmosphere in our hall...and the cakes were brilliant too!”

Parent comments included: "Thank-you for a wonderful morning" and “I'm amazed at the quality and presentation of my daughter's writing."
