Pre-Prep School

Reception to Year 2

Children in Pre-Prep delight in learning creatively through our relevant and vibrant, memorable curriculum. Exciting termly topics tailored to the childrens’ interests and dynamic, highly skilled staff enable them to make strong connections between subject areas, embed deep learning and recognise the importance of learning as it relates to real-life experiences.

We focus on ensuring that every child becomes confident in the fundamentals of early learning: phonic knowledge, reading, writing and number. Children participate in high quality, daily maths and phonics sessions and our rigorous approach ensures every child makes excellent progress.

The exciting topics taught throughout Pre-Prep provide further opportunities for children to develop skills both in English and Maths and also in subjects such as Geography, History, Art and Science. Topics include: Turrets and Tiaras, The Memory Box, In the Spotlight and Police, Fire, Emergency! As children move into Year 1, they take on the challenges of the Curiosity Project, investigating a new question each half term to provoke thoughtful discussion and encourage a deep dive into specific knowledge areas.

Our pre-prep pupils spend most of their time with their highly skilled form teacher; however, they also benefit from specialist teaching in music, ICT, French, swimming and PE. Our weekly Forest School and the 'Mind, Body and Soil' programmes take our love of learning outdoors and promote the holistic development of every child, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.

This approach enables children to acquire the fundamental skills needed to move up the school, and the confidence to use them independently to tackle the challenges ahead.

The early years

In the Early Years we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and we have built a curriculum which is rich in play. Pupils in the Reception class enjoy a balance of both independent and adult-led activities and participate in small group tasks both inside the classroom and outdoors.

The vibrant topic-based approach coupled with daily phonics and maths sessions ensure every child in Reception gets off to a flying start!

Resources that support and inspire

Pocklington Pre-Prep is all about people. Dedicated, enthusiastic form teachers will nurture and care for your child and inspire them to strive to succeed. Skilled specialist subject teachers, committed support staff, and children who are eager to learn, create a positive and warm environment that is critical for learning and self-development.

Children in Pre-Prep have access to their own outdoor area which has been developed to provide both a stimulating learning environment and a safe space to play. Imaginative and comprehensive learning programmes utilise all aspects of a carefully designed setting. Bright, welcoming classrooms, a kitchen for weekly cookery activities, access to our purpose-built theatre, swimming pool, sports hall, acres of playing fields, our on-site Forest School and sports pitches provide children with endless opportunities to build on their interests and talents.
