Shaping education for the next generation: Pocklington School Foundation launches new Towards 2040 strategy

Pocklington School Foundation has launched Towards 2040, an ambitious new Strategic Plan setting out its vision for the future and the priorities that will shape its development over the coming years.

Building on more than 500 years of heritage, the plan reflects the Foundation's commitment to providing an outstanding education that prepares young people not just for examinations, but for life.

The title Towards 2040 reflects a significant milestone: children joining Reception in 2026 will complete their Sixth Form education in 2040. The strategy considers how the Foundation can best prepare pupils for the opportunities and challenges of a rapidly changing world.

Guided by the Foundation's values of Courage, Truth and Trust, and our ethos of building character through strong connections and joyful learning, Towards 2040 identifies five strategic priorities::

  • Academic Advancement - providing an ambitious, broad education in which every pupil is challenged, supported and inspired
  • Individual Growth - ensuring every young person is known, valued and supported to develop confidence, resilience and independence
  • Character Formation - creating opportunities to explore, commit and excel through sport, the arts, outdoor education and wider school life
  • Community Partnership - strengthening connections between pupils, families, staff, Old Pocklingtonians and the wider community
  • Operational Excellence - ensuring the people, facilities and resources are in place to support the Foundation's long-term success

Turning ambition into action

Alongside these priorities, six key initiatives will help bring the strategy to life over the next three years.

Adventure Ready will develop practical life skills and independence, while Game On will support sporting participation for all pupils alongside opportunities for those with the talent to develop and excel.

Digital Horizons will prepare pupils to navigate an increasingly digital world, including the responsible use of emerging technologies. Safe Harbour at Pock will further strengthen our commitment to pupil wellbeing and pastoral care.

The Parent Experience will focus on further strengthening relationships between the Foundation and families, while Connected Futures will develop opportunities for bespoke careers guidance, mentoring and connections across the wider Foundation community.

A shared vision for the future

Becky Lovelock, Head of Pocklington School Foundation, said:

“Our history stretches back over five centuries of innovation, giving us an extraordinary foundation on which to build. Our priority has always been to the young people in our care - not just today, but over the years and decades to come.

“Children starting their education with us now will enter adulthood in a world we cannot predict. Our responsibility is to give them so much more than excellent academic qualifications – it is to empower them to show Courage, inspire them to seek Truth, and to champion them to earn Trust, so that they can thrive throughout their life, whatever the future holds.”

Developed through consultation with pupils, parents, staff, Old Pocklingtonians and the wider community, Towards 2040 sets the long-term direction for the Foundation, supported by clear priorities and initiatives for the coming three years.

The strategy reflects our commitment to building on Pocklington's existing strengths while continuing to develop the education, opportunities and sense of community we offer to every young person.
